Dr. Sterling Ortega received a one year pilot grant from the National MS Society entitled, “The Neuro-reparative Role of Myelin-specific CD8 T-cells in EAE Recovery”. The grant will explore the means by which CD8 T-cells can blunt and possibly reverse the autoimmune destruction that occurs during multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Nitin Karandikar received a VA grant award, entitled “ShEEP Request for Cytek AURORA Spectral Flow Cytometer,” under the VA’s Shared Equipment Evaluation Program (ShEEP).

Dr. Sterling Ortega received a pilot grant from the University of Iowa StrokeNet for Translational Stroke Studies. The grant entitled “Deep Immune Profiling with High Parameter Flow Cytometry to Identify Clinically Relevant Immune Correlates of Long-Term Cognitive Decline” is a collaboration between Dr. Ortega (Department of Pathology), Dr. Santiago Ortega-Gutiérrez (Department of Neurology) and Dr. Daniel Tranel (Department of Neuroscience).

Dr. Karandikar received a grant award from the NIH/NIAID under the "Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Program.” This grant will support the career development of Sterling Ortega, PhD, Associate of Pathology.

Nitin Karandikar, MD, PhD, professor and chair of the University of Iowa Department of Pathology, was recently awarded his second grant award from Humanities Iowa for his work building the Iowa Corridor Sangeet (ICS) program.

In a ceremony held within the Old Capitol Senate Chamber on May 1, the University of Iowa Postdoctoral Association (UIPDA), in coordination with the Graduate College, presented Dr. Nitin Karandikar with the 2019 Most Outstanding Postdoctoral Mentor Award.

Nitin Karandikar, MD, PhD, was presented with this year’s Outstanding Postdoctoral Mentor Award from the University of Iowa Graduate College for his guidance of postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, and overall impact on career advancement at the university.

Scott Steward-Tharp, DDS, PhD, resident in Oral Pathology at the College of Dentistry and postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Nitin Karandikar, was selected as a trainee on an Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA T90) from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research.
